Phase 6 of 6 · Belonging
Find Your Table
Play regularly with a group, handle the social side with confidence, and know what to expect long term.
Comfort comes from repetition and people, not more studying.
Play regularly
Weekly play is the strongest predictor of comfort; real confidence commonly arrives after 3–6 months. Online platforms with computer opponents are excellent practice between games.
Online practice options (2026 prices)
- NMJL Online (official): $4.99/month, $12.99/3 months, $49.99/year; card not included.
- Real Mah Jongg (app): live players and bots; about $6.99/month on iOS after a trial; bring your own card.
- I Love Mahj (browser): strong teaching tools; about $6/month or $60/year.
- Others: Mahjong Time, Mahj Parlour (free lessons), Mahjong 4 Friends.
Finding a group
Lesson series often become standing groups. Open plays at clubs and parlors commonly run $15–$50 entry. Community centers, JCCs, libraries, museums, and country clubs host games. Or start your own: four fellow beginners and one set is a group.
New players are generally welcomed when they say they're new. Say it.
What lessons cost (for context)
Private lessons run about $50–$70 per hour. Small group lessons are about $25–$40 per person per hour. Multi-session beginner series run about $175–$400 and often run three sessions of 2–2.5 hours.
Table etiquette
- Name every discard; place it face up in the center.
- Don't rearrange the discards.
- Keep a steady pace; phones away.
- Don't touch other players' racks or tiles; hand over tiles for joker exchanges.
- No table talk about your hand (“I need one more!”).
- Announce calls clearly; say “wait” or “pause” if you need a moment.
- Wait for a declared Mahjong to be verified before throwing in or exposing your own tiles.
- Arrange a winning hand in card order for easy checking.
- A bettor (fifth player) stays quiet and doesn't coach.
- Be patient with slower and newer players — you were one.
House rules
Groups differ on hot/cold wall, Charleston variations, stakes, and penalties. The best practice is one sentence, asked before the first game with any new group: “Are there any house rules I should know?”
Hosting your own game
Four players per table. Three players can play a modified game; five rotates a bettor; eight means two tables. Equipment per table: one set, four racks with pushers, a mat, dice, coins or a scorecard, and a current card per player.
Provide good overhead light and comfortable chairs. Serve low-mess, one-handed food on a side table — never on the mat. Plan about three hours.
What to expect
Frustrating games and wall games happen to everyone. A new card each spring means a short relearning period for all players — compare old and new cards side by side, start with 2–3 sections, and learn 3–5 go-to hands to recognize on sight.
Speed comes naturally with repetition. And for many players, the social connection becomes the main draw — in-person, screen-free time with people you like.
Beyond the basics
When you're ready: deeper strategy and defense, local and charity tournaments, NMJL-affiliated events like Destination Mah Jongg and the Mah Jongg World Championship, even tournament cruises. Tournaments use the current NMJL card, and scoring differs from home play.
Saving money in this phase
- Compare free and paid practice before subscribing: Mahj Parlour offers free lessons, and most paid platforms have trials. Annual plans beat monthly if you know you'll stick with one.
- Hosting at home is the cheapest regular game there is — no entry fees, and the equipment is a one-time cost. Watch our deals page for sets, racks, and mats.
- Starting a group of four beginners splits the learning cost: one set, one rulebook, shared cards.
